  1. Our front page copy and photo look like they could be an advertisment for Iowa tourism. What a cute way to lead into the March discussion. How old is Regina?

  2. Hey Julia, thanks for asking and prompting a bit of bragging. Gina is 13 years old and the apple of her grandparents' eyes. She is in the 8th grade and an honor student. She reads the Marcus blog and was evidently inspired to post a comment, thereby making her our youngest poster to date.
Her parents (Baritone Bob--Associate Director of Distance Education at the University of Central Florida--student body of 42,000) and her mother Linda--a lawyer--dote on her as do we. She is one of the reasons we retired to Florida. There was a grandchild waiting to be spoiled.

  3. hi bob... as i've mentioned, by husband and i live in tallahassee. i work at florida state - and my husband is a graduate student there. while we're not in florida for good like you are, we are surely enjoying the weather! today we took in the civil war battle reinactment near natural bridge, 12 miles from tallahassee. it seemed uncanny to spend an entire march afternoon outside when we are both still accustomed to march being blizzard season. here's to the florida sunshine and warm marcus, iowa memories!

  7. With spring on its way (and temps in the high 60s here today YEAH!) does anyone have any good stories about springtime in Iowa? Those late snowstorms -- quite a few around St. Pat's; the knee-deep muck of early spring gravel roads -- ruts of swallow-you-up proportions; spring sports; that eternally raw March wind; the earliest flowers; the birth of farm animals ... any or all of that...

  8. Gutentag Uwe Markus! We are delighted you have found our little blog and are enjoying it. We hope you will visit Marcus in the future. The townspeople will be most happy to show you around!

  9. Gutentag Uwe Markus,

Would be very happy to have you visit our town in Iowa. Visiting the U.S. before you probably know a little about Iowa. Well we are located in the northwest part of the state. Marcus is a farming community of about 1200 in population.

So you are very welcome and would be glad to give you a guided tour of the things you would be interested in.

Also I know very little German and would like to learn more so maybe you can help with that....

Let us know when you are coming.

    Sincerely,

    Jack Clarkson
    Marcus, Iowa

  10. Hey, how about some chatter in the outfield! This is our lightest month so far. First day of spring and only 15 comments! Must be leading some busy, busy lives out there!

  11. Thanks to this blog site, I remembered to watch ABC's Miracle Workers tonight featuring Dr. Dorr. I hope others from Marcus caught it also. It was quite a tribute to someone with Marcus roots. It's too bad that generation of Dorrs just ahead of me weren't here to see it;I know they would have been proud of their nephew, as we all are. Irv Deichmann

  12. Irv:

Thanks for the kind words re our cousin, Larry Dorr. If you really want to learn more amazing stuff about Larry "GOOGLE" Dr. Laurence Dorr and read about his program he started some time ago called "OPERATION WALK." Larry would love for any and all Marcusites to be part of one of these trips abroad. Larry is an amazing man and has been blessed by the good Lord with a real passion to make a difference in any and all people's lives.

BTW.....for Jack Clarkson and other baseball fans Larry put some new knees in Willie McCovey a couple of years ago and most recently gave Tommy Lasorda's wife a new hip!!!!! For those wondering who they are...Willie McCovey played for the S.F. Giants "1st baseman" when Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds, Juan Marichel and the like were on the team and Tommy Lasorda was the manager of the L.A. Dodgers for many years.

  13. Kurt Yes I did watch Dr. Lawrence Dorr on the "Miracle Workers" last night. Very impressive. I have never met Dr. Dorr but I did meet his father many years ago. I knew that he had put a new hip in Mrs. Tommy Lasorda. Now I can get on the 'Tommy Lasorda Blog' and tell him that he has two Marcus, Iowa connections me and Dr. Dorr. I remember Tommy when he came up with the Dodgers in 1954. I also had a brief handshake in Dodger Stadium in 1988. Have been a fan of his for many years.
Dr. Dorr sounds like a very dedicated surgeon. Wish there were more TV programs that were that interesting.

  16. A very sad week in Marcus with the passing of Donna Hoefling. She was a very fine lady.

At the wake and funeral service her family gave her a wonderful tribute. Telling some of the things they learned from her and that happened as they were growing up. The message they sent was how important family is.

At the wake service the long line of people waiting to extend sympathy to the family was as many as I have ever seen. I guess that shows how she was thought of. And at the funeral the Church was full.

She will be missed and was a wonderful lady 'full circle'.

  18. Dentist Wanted: Marcus is looking at opening a dental practice but needs a dentist. Can you help get the word out??

Any one interested or wanting more information should contact Rod Ogren at 712-376-2680.

  19. Just wondering if you have thought of any on-line websites that post jobs nationally ... you just never know. I googled employment for dentists and instantly got some career service sites that post jobs. If you haven't done this already, you might consider it. Someone out there is longing to get away from the big city rat race and your notice may be the little incentive they need to make the leap. Who knows ... stranger things have happened.
    Good luck!
