  4. anyone remember when it was the new chirstmas lights in marcus?
I think that the Jaycees had something going on with that and it was something big up town. anyone remember?

I just got back from Mark Roethlers memorail service. It was very nice and towards the end Amber did a great job with her comments.

  8. from Bob Reed

ANOTHER CHANCE TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

It’s coming up again—the New Year. And with it, New Year’s Resolutions. ARRGH! For they represent a delicate balance between will power and wishes.

We’re told they are descendants of the spiritual exercises of the ancients. Okay. But what do they really represent?

Growing up in Marcus, I first experienced them in junior high. The girls seemed to revel in them—along with spin-the-bottle and other games foreign, but interesting. We guys felt ambivalent about resolutions—sorta’ embarrassed about not really having any.

Not that we were perfect and didn’t need improvement. Our girl classmates repeatedly let us know that.

But in those years “I will dress better” or “I will get over my pimples” or “I will be friends with Peggy” didn’t seem to be of much importance to the guys. It was only later that we began to connect them with adult ladies.

We overheard, “Next year, I will stop smoking” or “ I will exercise more” or the most ubiquitous, “I will lose weight”—THE female pledge. That supposed universal desire of persons of the female persuasion has probably echoed through time.

Guys don’t seem to succumb to all of this as much. Or they don’t advertise their thoughts.

For a resolution demands an introspection—an analysis of oneself. The philosopher Epicurus postulated, “It is never too late or too early to care for the well-being of the soul.” A New Year’s Resolution is like an annual exam by the doctor about things you don’t tell the doctor about.

Resolutions act like a sort of collective drunkenness, during which people make vows that nobody expects to keep. Folks strive for a way of life that is wiser and more responsible.

And most often they fail but try again, undeterred by previous results. For resolutions are about optimism and control of life.

I’m a better person than I seem to be. I can change my life in even a small way. I can rid myself of laziness and apathy. I can be the pilot of my existence. I will govern myself and not be a slave to external circumstances. I have willpower and can change.

I don’t ever remember making a New Year’s Resolution. But for those who do—GO!

That sounds like such a great time for everyone. When I was home at Thanksgiving I was never more proud of my hometown as it seemed like there were Christmas lights up all over the community and there were some really amazing lights that people were putting up in front of their homes!

I wish I lived close enuf to be part this great event this Friday night. Think of all of us while you guys enjoy such a super event and time put on by so many committed Marcus people!

  14. Please remember the town of Paullina as it goes through the devastation of fire on there main street. I am sure the people in the small town of Paullina will pull together and help out in there time of need.It reminds me of the fires that our town has seen in the past and how the people of our great town of Marcus pulled together and helped out when needed.
    God bless!

  15. Sad to hear about Paullina's fire. Living north of Marcus, we went to Paullina quite often -- especially to go swimming, picnicking and fishing at the lake. When I put this up on my family's Web site, my Uncle Dan (who graduated from Holy Name in 1957 and lives is CA) remembered the night that Marcus lost one of its favorite businesses:

"For a small town, this is a serious loss on a personal and financial levels. I remember the night the old Marcus theatre burned. We heard rumors early in the day that a fire had started. Some older students got detention because they went downtown to see what was going on. Later in the evening, the town gathered to watch it burn. It was so cold. The ice hung from the hoses. People bundled up in heavy coats, boots, mittens and hats. Finally, when a huge roof timber fell into the fire, it was over. The theatre was never built, but the locals raised money to build a new one just east of downtown. It was never the same. No broken seats close to the screen for anyone under twelve, unless you with your parents, of course. No ten cent ticket and five cents for popcorn. No getting out of the show when it was still twilight (the country was at war and on triple daylight time). It was a fade and end with memories riding into the sunset."

  16. Hometown Christmas was so much fun on Friday night. It was great seeing all the people around town. To bad the live nativity got cancelled but, it was too cold outside for those people that help out with that. It was nice having Santa at the Commuity Center where the festival of trees where. Good job to the fire dept. and there chili /soup feed always a good turn out.

  26. I have seen some pics as I'm out on the east coast this week but Melinda and Jacob drove around town and took some cool pics of the snow piled up in big drifts. She said the drift between our house and the neighbors was over the top of the deck which is at least 6 feet tall. I will ask my Jacob to post some later today if he gets time.

  27. With the large amount of snow around our community the Marcus Fire Department has a special request to all of you that have a fire hydrant close to your home or business.
Please take the time to remove the snow from on and around the fire hydrant. A few extra minutes with a snow shovel or the snow blower will be a great aid to us in the event of a fire and we need the hydrant for water.
The City crews have been working hard removing snow and will eventually get the opportunity to work on this, but your assistance now will really help us if the unexpected happens. Thanks for your cooperation.

    "Yours in Service"

  29. The Marcus class of 1970 is planning a 40th reunion during the 2010 fair. We've lost track of a classmate named David Petersen. He was in the army at the time of our 20th reunion stationed at Ft Riley, KS. I know it's a long shot, but if anyone has any info on David, would you please pass it on to me? Thanks!

  30. Could someone give me some information (name, owners, background, their serving schedule, the phone number?) on the little place that sells broasted chicken in Germantown? How about some information about Germantown itself? Anything available? Broasted chicken? (Has anyone had broasted chicken anywhere else besides the Midwest?)I'd like to do a bit of writing about it. Thanks!
