A few weeks ago while researching another topic, I unexpectedly found myself in the August 2005 Marcus Blog! And what a pleasure it was. The Blog was only eight months old then, but it had seventy-six posts—-and all were positive—-even upbeat.

Even more remarkable, while I counted twenty-three posted “anonymously,” of those, only FOUR were not signed! Sadly, at least two of those bloggers are no longer with us—-Earl Rae and Bonnie Garlow Morgenthaler. Kurt Dorr had posted a number of Marcus photos, each one labeled for easy identification. I recommend a revisit.

Now, more than five years later, I want to thank the following for always identifying themselves on the Marcus Blog. Personally, I no longer read anything that is not signed.

Jacob Rosewell, Julie Simpson, Fred Dorr, Margaret Dorr, Corinne Alesch, Don Peters, Tammy Johnson, MMC School Board, Ron Rosewall, Bob Metcalf, Kristi, Ashley Johnson, Lindsey Hauschildt, Thomas John Willems, Bob Meylor, Fred Wilkens Family, Paul (Wilkens?), Philip Dorr, Seph Alesch, Kimberly Jenniss Ross, Kim Ames, Bill (?), Nathan (?), Gina Rassel, Jordan Westmoreland, and Cam Rassel, plus others in previous months.

  24. Tammy,

What a wonderful idea to sell the Marcus streets signs for a donation. Love the idea that people are bidding on them. I'm going to copy and paste this to my class website. I'm sure someone there would love to have a sign.

P.S. Although Rhode Island is only 45 minutes wide and about 60 minutes long, we were lucky enough to live across the bay from all the major flooding that is going on here. Our basement flooded, but nothing dire like no water or no sewer. Tomorrow I am going to try to get near the flood-damaged area to take photos. I guess the mall we go some often is totally under water. Hard to watch it on TV and realize it's all happening less than 10 minutes away. My daughter works in the ER at a children's hospital and has been working and sleeping there because it takes so long to get to her home in CT. Rte 95 -- major East Coast highway -- was shut down for a good stretch for the past two days. Crazy. Thanks for asking, Margaret. Hope you are well.

I wish I had known about this blog earlier. Who knew that anything having to do with Marcus could ever be interesting? What would you all do without Tom to stir up trouble?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hey Fellow Bloggers.... don't you think it would look nice if downtown Marcus had a few strategically placed flower pots to brighten up the downtown area?

In response to "another willems" I understand that living in a small town can be aggravating at times, because, everybody knows what you are doing, but in times of trouble, nothing comes to your aid faster than the people in a small community. I myself will put up with them talking about me, because well, crap... then I figure they aren't talking about someone else! Happy Easter everyone! May you find all the eggs that where hidden!

It's GOOD FRIDAY! So, it's recommended that you plant your potatoes today. Mine were planted between 12:05 and 12:19 a.m.

Just wanted to take this time to remind everyone about the potatoes, because this is the only day out of this Easter weekend that I will be posting. I want to give everyone the Peace of this sacred Christian Holiday to be FREE from my opinions being posted.

Have a HAPPY EASTER, EVERYONE!!! May GOD BLESS YOU and your families.

  29. If anyone in town has silverware that they would like to get rid of, the community center is looking for some. We have been borrowing some and would like to have our own. They don't need to be fancy, just thought that if anybody had any taking up any space and they wanted to get rid of them, we would be glad to take them!

Tammy, instead of trying to be like every other town, why not try to do something out of the ordinary and do something that's not like Cherokee, Le Mars and other places? They all have flower pots downtown.

If you want something that's going to attract people to see something different, Marcus could take out the regular sidewalks and put in cobblestones or marble slabs. And, in the centers of the sidewalks, every so far apart, there could be spots left open to plant flowers. In other words, have flower pots built into the sidewalks. That would be something worth viewing.

There's other things done to bring people into the downtown area, but Marcus should have thought of them before starting to move everything out to the highway.

Marcus used to be a bustling town back in the early 1900s. People had a reason to come downtown. But, now, with the expansion out by the highway, there will be fewer reasons to go downtown.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Tom- I appreciate your comment on the flowers downtown. I love flowers, have a boat load of them on my farm. I think flowers in any setting are an assest to the community. I have seen some of the things done that you have suggested. I'm pretty sure that cobblestone isn't in the towns budget, with the Iowa winters we have, you need something easy to move out for the winter as any type of container isn't easy to clean around. When you talk of a built in container, do you mean like they have down the highway in Sioux City? They look nice, very expensive and the plants tend to die every winter due the chemicals put on the streets. I wasn't alluding to anything big, maybe 4 pots on the corners of main street.
As far as commenting on the businesses going out to the highway, I think that is something that everytown has to deal with. As far as I am concerned, I don't care where the business opens it's doors at, as long as they open them up in the Marcus Community. Many towns have Business parks and thriving downtowns. If money grew on trees, we could do a lot, unfortunately- it doesn't and we have to work within the constraints of budgets.
I know that Marcus was a bustling town years ago, but that's in the past, we have to look forward and not always behind us. Things change, you either adapt or die. I suggest if you have time to read the book "Who moved my Cheese?" By Spencer Johnson

Kim Ames- your street sign is in the Community Center, just pick up a key from Grandma's garden and you may pick it up anytime.

Thank you both for your donations to the center!

Jordan- I still have 2 Walnut streets left... let me know which one you want!

  49. If you're looking for flower containers that have a "farm community" feel, you might try stainless milk seperator "containers." My mom planted moss roses in them on the farm and they looked very nice. It might be cool to think of "out of the box" containers for the flowers downtown. Another idea for a contest ... :) Anybody else have ideas for flower boxes downtown?

  50. Thomas John WillemsApril 05, 2010

I was actually talking about leaving sections of blocks out of the sidewalk while it's being constructed, filling them with dirt to about 1 1/2 inches from the top, and planting flowers right in the center of the sidewalk.

If Marcus did something like that, I would be willing to donate to help with the project. I believe, that would be a cause worth donating to. Just like I donate to Holy Name Catholic Church. However, I request that the larger donations are put to a specific use. I would do the same for this type of project, downtown. I would make certain that the funds would be used for construction materials.

The more a place expands, the more of a burden it is on the taxpayers and on the City budgets. Take Sioux City, for example. The economic burden is hurting businesses because of higher taxes and fewer customers. A lot of their businesses either moved to the out-skirts or have closed. "Adaptation" has done little to actually help the City of Sioux City. They had to start being creative on ways to bring people back to the downtown area.

If you ever get a chance to visit Sigourney, Iowa, take the time to admire what they've done to their downtown area. It's quite a place to behold. Hazel Green, WI, Sheldon and Primghar, IA are also places that have utilized their downtowns to their benefit. More building doesn't always create more economic prosperity.

  57. Thomas, Sioux City, has always been a basket case due to its proximity to Nebraska and South Dakota. Our politicians in Des Moines are too stupid to figure out that our taxes are too high and we can never compete on the borders with South Dakota or Nebraska. Until that changes, nothing will help Sioux City. You'd think the State of Iowa would figure it out after seeing Gateway, IBP and others started in Iowa and skip over the border shortly thereafter.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I agree with anonymous- if Iowa wants to stop losing jobs to it's border states, it has to do something with the tax structure. It amazes me, that they can't get that done...

  59. Thomas John WillemsApril 07, 2010

Nowhere, in my comment, did I speak of businesses that have gone to the neighboring States. I was talking about the businesses that moved out to Lakeport Commons and the area surrounding downtown, like Gunderson's. The taxes are cheaper for them to be outside of the downtown area.

It'a a fact that the more streets that have to be built, due to expansion, will cause more of a tax burden to the taxpayers because of the cost of upkeep. And, there's no way a person can argue against that fact. It is a must that taxes have to raise in order to pay for more streets to be built. If towns and cities actually utilize what they already have (ie., pre-existing buildings, empty lots to build on, and find creative ways to attract patrons), it is less costly and a much better way to have economic stability within the Community.

It's like when the Marcus taxpayers will end up footing the excessive bill for the non-needed expansion to the elementary and high school buildings. I voted NO, because it is an unneeded tax burden. Especially, when the M-M-C school district is forced to merge with a surrounding school district. The building will be sitting there rotting away and being paid for through higher taxes. And, it will come to a time that the M-M-C school district no longer exists. It's just a matter of when it happens.

I would like to see a Law go into effect that is to the effect of this, "If a person Votes for something to be constructed, they are the ones whom pay for it." I don't use Marcus Junction, the Marcus Motel, Hog Splats, or the new Metal Roofing place. Therefore, I don't believe that my tax dollars should go for the upkeep of the roads or any of the other costs that they may need.

And, the taxpayers will be paying for all of the excessive constrution that they are doing outside of Marcus, whether anyone admits it or not.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh Thomas, where's the logic? Because YOU don't use something, it shouldn't be built? Community needs unity. You offer a good idea and then backtrack with such selfish notions. No community would exist at all with your perception of how it should be run.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Thomas John WillemsApril 07, 2010

There someone goes again, taking what I said out of context.

    1. I didn't say that "because I don't use something it shouldn't be built."

What I said was, "If I'm not going to use it, my tax dollars shouldn't be used to fund it's upkeep." Mainly, because the expansion area is unnecessary and takes away from actually revitalizing the downtown area.

If the City Council and its cronies had pushed to use downtown for the area of building, what they have outside of Marcus, I would have agreed on the building of those businesses. They are showing that they have no real intent on making downtown a thorough-fare, where visitors will actually want to come, or a real symbol of "Pride in the Past".

    2. I believe, we should be using the space downtown to build businesses, instead of expanding outside of Marcus. And, stop wasting taxpayer dollars to further the Progressive Agenda.

    3. I have also stated that I WILL donate funds, for materials, if Marcus decides to create more beautiful sidewalks, downtown, to help revamp the downtown area.

    4. I can't see the point in wasting ton of money on a project, such as the addition to the schools, when in a few to several years down the road there won't even be an M-M-C school district. It was a blatant and haphazard way to spend tax dollars. All of that money could have been used to truly revitalize the downtown area.

That's what I said between the two posts.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Tommy if your so unhappy with the ways things are done in Marcus. Or can't support Marcus then I think it is time you leave. Better yet just keep your comments to yourself!
Marcus has its faults but it is my home town and I support it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thomas, it is my understanding that Marcus was established because of the railroad that rolled through the countryside. Marcus was a stop on the line between Chicago and Sioux City. Thus, a downtown grew near the train stop. That was a pretty common way that most Iowa towns were established. Then, as the years rolled by, progress continued, cars were invented, people didn't use the train, they drove their own cars. Roads were built, the railroad died. Now the majority of transportation into and out of town is via roads, not trains, thus, commerce has developed along the roads. Life has sped up, people are always in a hurry and fewer people are willing to drive INTO town for their commerce. Now, as far as I know, every new building along Hwy 3 pays taxes in Marcus. So, let's see, if you don't use the Marcus Junction, the Guesthouse, etc. then the taxes they pay should not be used to repair your street, keep water flowing into your home and have police patrol your neighborhood? Do I have that right? BTW your pot roast recipe was yummy. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  64. So divvy up tax dollars according to the individual desires of each person in the community. Tom doesn't need the school, so don't put his taxes toward the school. Joe doesn't use the library, so his taxes don't go toward its upkeep. Mary doesn't have a car so she doesn't have to pay for the city streets. Again, how logical is this, Thomas? That IS the kind of community that does fail. Marcus has defied the odds so far. If those at the helm had the viewpoint you have, we would have lost our schools long ago and the downtown would have folded up 20 years ago. You have some good ideas, Thomas. But tearing up the concrete to put in flowers on main street isn't going to rejuvenate anything. The pharmacy being open more hours is a start. There is room to grow wherever growth occurs. Give it a chance instead of being so negative.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I know some of you may be disturbed by comments made by Thomas Willems. Others, like me, see it as public discourse. I happen to view it as healthy and interesting. To those who are upset by it, you can choose not to read the blog. I for one have enjoyed the recent liveliness of the blog. And finally, I would like to quote Voltaire, "I may not agree with what you have to say but I defend to the death your right to say it". Go Tommy. . . .

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thomas John WillemsApril 07, 2010

No, I'm not leaving town. So, stop trying to push me to do so. Better yet, continue and your requests will continue to fall on deaf ears.

All I'm saying is, "The push to move everything outside of town is a total lack of support for the 'Main Street' Project, which Marcus is supposedly a member." The "Main Street Project", which we do get funds from the State, is supposed to be used to better the downtown areas of the Towns and Cities around the State.

So, Marcus was started by the railroad running through the area. What does that have to do with the way people are throwing the downtown area to the wolves, by saying that it's not worthy enough to rejuvenate so people will want to come into Marcus and spend money?

And, places need to provide a reason to have people come into their downtowns. I can sprout one magnificent example of how creative ingenuity attracts many people to a downtown area. The wonderful Dutch heritage town of Orange City, which I take pride in the fact that I'm 3/4 Dutch, has rejuvenated their park. Even though, it is not located on a busy street or highway, it is so magnificent because of what they have done with it. So, yes, re-doing the sidewalks in a new fashion and planting flowers in them, which very rarely, if at all, happens can bring people into see something worth talking about. And, it would be worth seeing. Before you start with, "They have the Tulip Festival", bantar. I travel there at least 3 times per year to admire what they have done to the place. It is truly a wonderful feeling to know that they have the stamina to do something so wonderful for their downtown area. They could have put it oustide, along the highway, but they didn't. They provide a great service for their community by putting it down in the heartbeat of their town. It's that simple. If you give people a reason to travel into town, they will.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Perhaps we should all stop talking to Tommy? He insists on turning every one of these blog posts into his own personal soapbox. It's tiresome, he's tiresome.

Honestly Tommy, no one cares about your opinion. And the fact that you think downtown Orange City is "magnificent" speaks volumes about your poor taste in architecture. Those building which you heap praise upon are tacky and an eyesore.I've shown REAL dutch people (not people 3/4 dutch) pictures of Orange City and they can't get over how gaudy it is. It's a pitiful attempt to reconnect to a country most of them know nothing about.

Lastly, throwing marble slabs downtown would be a HUGE waste of money and would stand in stark contrast to the degraded and unkempt buildings.

You need to put some thought into your posts.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ha Ha! Tommy actually used the term "cronies" again!

Oh Tommy, never change! Your lunacy, persecution complex and empty headed opinions are a source of constant amusement to me.

    ReplyDelete

There, you finally put it into perspective to see what people really think about the downtown of Marcus. They have "degredated and unkempt" buildings. That really says alot about the people of this town and what they really think of it. It's no wonder that I lost faith in it long time ago.

It's about time that Marcus actually did something about those "eyesores" (degradated and unkempt buildings), instead of building more buildings that will eventually be "unkempt and degradated", because people will find it easier to build more buildings. That's what it appears is happening. Waste taxpayer money on building more when you have no intention of preserving what you do have. That's the way your post reads, "Anonymous".

And, the true Dutch folks that I've spoken with, from Holland, were pleased with the buildings of Orange City. That includes the Dutch entourage that came all the way from Holland to be a part of the Tulip Festival. Oh yeah, I attend the Tulip Festival and meet people from Holland that goes to the University. They have spoken highly of what you and your Progressive pals call an "eyesore". They continue to brag about how Orange City culminates around the Heritage of Holland.

Apparently, you've never seen pictures of Amsterdam or other places within the Dutch Countries. Their buildings are of the same basic design as is found in Orange City.

And, I did mention cobblestones. They are very cheap to use. In fact, this summer, I will be doing my own work with cobblestones to improve the area I use for flowers.

Here's the real issue I have with Marcus. The majority of people seem to demand that people keep their yards cleaned up and more beautified. However, when it comes to truly making the Public Sector (downtown) more beautified, they can care less.

Since we seem to have so many psychiatrists on this discussion page that can analyze what I write., I'll do my own analysis, free of charge. - The reason that I believe the people of Marcus have the "I don't care about the past or downtown" mentality is because:

    1) Many of the newcomers to the area have no idea what it was truly like to grow up in Marcus, during the 70s and 80s. Therefore, they have no idea how wonderful it was when people minded their own business. Or, at least, didn't say anything to the people they were talking about.

    2) There's no accountability for the way the Elected Officials spend the taxpayer's money. Most people just let Darrell Downs and his cronies spend, spend, and do more spending on non-needed projects without even questioning what they are doing.

    3. People are more interested in controlling other people's lives. However, they can't do that within the Public Sector, so they have to attack them within the Private Sector (Private Property).

How am I doing so far?

BTW, I have other ideas as to how Marcus could rejuvenate and beautify downtown. Since, the people really don't want to do anything to improve the Public Sector, it's not worth sharing them. And, that's the way it appears. However, I will continue to be critical of what is happening.

People don't have to respond to what I say. It really doesn't matter to me. As I said in an earlier post, "Gina and Jordan never had to back me up about the statements I had made."

However, I will continue to post. If you don't like what I write, don't respond. Don't worry, my feelings won't get hurt. And, if you really don't like what I have to say, don't read the Blog. I've never twisted any arms or broken any legs to make people read what I have to say. You can skip right over my posts or close the Blog if it's the last one on the page. There's nothing stopping you.

I write for the benefit of those that live out of town that read this Blog, because they have a Right to know the truth about what is going on in this town. I will NEVER paint a rosy picture of what is happening nor will I make everything sound so wonderful when it's not.

Margaret, here's the place I order most of my tulips from. They are inexpensive and the family, The Mulders) is very hospitable. They're located in Orange City.

They even asked if I would look through their catalogs and help pick out new varieties for this year, which I believe are going to be best sellers.

A gift of 20,000 tulip bulbs for the Iowa cities of Pella and Orange City recently was presented to Senator Chuck Grassley. With the gesture, the government of the Nether-lands re-inforces its ties with the two communities which heavily promote their Dutch heritage.

And? My point was that throwing down expensive marble slabs would look way out of place next to those derelict buildings. I've heard some stupid ideas people have had about improving Marcus, but marble slabs just might take the cake. Why don't we pave the streets with gold while we're at it? There are FAR better uses for taxpayer money you lunatic.

"And, the true Dutch folks that I've spoken with, from Holland, were pleased with the buildings of Orange City"

I'm sure they were merely being polite. The faux-Dutch architecture in Orange City is a travesty and a pathetic attempt to connect with a country they will never visit and most couldn't even find on a map. Thankfully, Marcus lacks a strong dutch heritage so we will never be inundated with such unmitigated crap.

Samson, I already did prove you wrong with the address and portion of the article about what the Government of the Netherland really thinks of Orange City. And, they show their support by providing tulips and coming back year-after-year. I used facts to back up my statement.

I didn't rule out using "imitation" marble. It's much less expensive and looks as good as the real thing.

And, like I said, we should be fixing up those buildings downtown, first, instead of building new ones.

Also, if you don't like Orange City's way of doing things then you're going to wanna stay away from the horse arena during the fair. Because, by then, I will hopefully have a windmill, a large set of Dutch wooden shoes, and an exact replica of the "Old Factory" built and ready to place within my flower bed area. I'll be starting construction on that next month.

Just so everyone knows, I'll be revamping my whole setup this year. I'm going to turn my flower area into a shrine to the Ancestors of our family. They were from England, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, and Luxembourg. Over the next couple of years, a massive change will take place on this corner.

Your childlike naivete is astounding. You think the token gesture the "Government of the Netherlands" bestowed upon Orange City has any weight whatsoever? It doesn't change the fact that architecture in OC is a monstrosity.

"Also, if you don't like Orange City's way of doing things then you're going to wanna stay away from the horse arena during the fair. Everything that has to do with my flowers will be on my cousin's yard, the empty lots south of the house. The fence will be on our property, where the house sits. So, it's going to be able to be viewed by everyone that comes around.

FYI, I'm actually working to clean up our yard, as well as my cousin's yard. However, I'm doing it to my liking.

After that, I'm going to keep hounding Darrell Downs and his cronies to hold up their end of the bargain. Because, what people don't know is that Darrell wanted the old trailer removed so quickly, before the fair in 2003 (I'm sure that was the year), that he co-signed for a $1,000.00 loan at Farmer's State Bank for me. He said not to tell anyone. But, since he never kept his end of the bargain, now is as good of time to share that information. This just goes to show that Darrell uses low-down tactics to get what he wants, but has no problem leaving people to hang-out to dry.

And, I'm going to keep pushing for the downtown to be revitalized, as it should be.

    ReplyDelete
  86. With all due respect Thomas, you might want to tone down your distaste for Darrell Downs. It's starting to sound a bit threatening.

  87. Thomas John WillemsApril 08, 2010

I'm going to explain this in plain and simple terms. "I will not step outside the bounds of what is LEGAL when it comes to receive what was promised." I have explained that to Sheriff Scott, when they accused me of having something to do with the break-in at the Marcus Water Tower a few years ago.

Violent activities are in my past. I am not violent and I do not condone violence against ANY Elected Official, their families, or any Citizen of this Nation. I believe in using all LEGAL means necessary.

So, you do not have to worry. Darrell will be just fine. But, if for some reason he's not, it won't be because of me. I can assure you of that. I'm not happy with Darrell, but I will cause him NO harm. And, he knows that. If he didn't before, he does now.

  96. From Max and Bob Reed

    Dear Wonderful Marcus Bloggers,
We guess it’s time to comment about the postings on this blog. It’s done with reluctance and regret. But maybe we can offer a perspective.
This method of communication is nearly six years old. Please take a moment to reread its background and purpose at the top of each month’s section. Max and I started it and our son Bob has been the Webmaster.
It has enjoyed some success—-even lauded by the “Des Moines Register” as a sort of electronic, small-town, over-the-back-fence way of exchanging news for locals and expatriates. As the writer “MMC Alum” correctly noted (please see the posting of April 1 toward the end of the March 2010 section), this has not been a typical blog.
We knew and know that. Those blogs consist of an opinion-laden, single writer doing his/her thing and reacting to responses.
This site however, was an attempt to be a democratic, community, multiperson avenue-—and has served well as such. In its first five years, the postings were informative and newsy. The exchanges were reasonable. We have been reluctant to delete any submissions and eliminated only three postings because they bordered on the obscene.
This venue then, has never really been edited. It’s been an open forum with no rules and regs. That’s been deliberate.
But in the past year, this electronic destination is in danger of becoming an issue-oriented tool of some folks who are disgruntled and angry over topics big and small. They speak out against the local government, town employees, and other individuals, and write about thongs and fences, the perceived injustice to their families’ names, their resentment of the “haves”—-and even God.
From our perspective, this venue is recently being used as a disputatious place to express strong personal feelings and lamentations. And some folk respond in kind.
Others—-too many—-hide under the anonymous label. We have never felt the need to drop any postings because they were not signed. But writing is a powerful agency and anonymity is the enemy of true discourse.
It is easy for some to hide behind a nobody label and not have the courage of their convictions, by not signing their names, as one must do for a Letter to the Editor in a newspaper. We have always believed that the discussions here should be reasoned exchanges by named individuals.
But to use this forum for specific controversial purposes and attacks, anonymous or credited, was—-and is—-not the reason for its existence. It was never intended to be a place to air individual grievances. Or to provide people with confessional portions of one’s personal life, creating what the writer Kurt Vonnegut called “perpetual astonishment.”
Its modest goals were to create a place where folks from our community could connect and reconnect, exchange reminiscences and news of upcoming events and progress in our beloved town. It was hoped that the postings would be something to share and savor, appealing—-as Lincoln once said, ”to the better angel of our nature.”
Perhaps that objective was naïve. But it worked for five years. Now it seems to have been “hijacked” for other purposes, as one commentator wrote.
Maybe this blog should be humbly abandoned and another, issue-oriented discussion web site created for Marcus folk, by someone else. The late-coming critical “MMC Alum” (who read the last two months of posts) suggested this, while promising to “check back” with us all, evidently sometime.
Two other anonymous participants also think this site should be discontinued. One recommends that we “pull the plug” and another agrees, calling this blog “ugly and hateful.”
    (continued below)

    ReplyDelete
  97. (Continued)
On a new collective “discussion board,” opinions and agendas and issues—local, national, international—could be debated and discussed by Marcus people. Or perhaps individuals on this site could set up their own blogs and invite us to join them on their sounding boards. Or people could use Facebook or Twitter or any number of other ways to communicate.
On those places, personal stories could prevail and human follies and foibles could be explored. Folks could wrestle on-line with the angst that has perhaps shaped their lives. Hurts could be aired and compassion and sympathy offered.
They could also be provocative, sharply polarized, venues of attacks, where everyone can have at anyone else—a place where folks can search for the Truth, perhaps the most fundamental of human undertakings, ranking closely behind the quests for warmth, food, and a mate.
We simply don’t think this little blog should serve those purposes.
In our limited time and space on this earth, we are all inescapably bound by our community kinship in our lives together. But to have this forum become a repository of gripes and attacks means that we are all complicit in fostering that recent growing reputation.
However, the wonderful exchanges about bidding for the old Marcus street signs, and flowers on Main Street, are hopefully a harbinger of the future of this venue. Perhaps we can work out this business together, collectively.
So maybe we should all calm down, reflect, and wait a couple of months to see what happens on this blog before we take any action. Perhaps we will then all be better informed.
What do you think? Should we continue this blog as it was intended or drop it? Should we make some changes?

    Faithfully, Max and Bob

I say, "This blog needs to be adjusted to allow for the bad, as well as the good." There's not only good things happening in Marcus. It would be just like only having good news every day on the news stations or the in the newspapers. It would be a big lie, because bad things happen, as well. So, it's selfish to want a town blog/discussion group to only praise everything, but not to show any sign of dissension (disagreement).

Marcus was a wonderful place to grow up. Since then, it has changed - not for the better. As Citizens, we all have our opinions. But, to only allow praises of a City Council that is sucking the money pot dry and making Marcus a Progressive Community borders on the lines of extending the Obamanation into this rural Community. As we have all been witnessed to, or should have been, Obama is trying to do the same thing to FOX News. He can't stand having dissension from them. Therefore, he is trying to force them off of the air.

So, do whatever you want with this blog, but differences of opinion should not be hampered just because some people don't like others telling the real truth about what's going on in Marcus. It appears that they are afraid to have people from outside the Community find out that it's not all peaches-and-cream or a beautiful spring morning every day.

One last thing, before I sign off for a while and let the people continue to sell the "World" a lemon, by only singing praise and glory about Darrell Downs and the City Council, "I will be making my once in a blue moon appearance at the City Council meeting tomorrow night. And, I will let my voice be heard."

    ReplyDelete
  99. Tom,
This blog has been listening to the bad (your bad) for a while now. It doesn't need adjusted for any more negativity. Please re-read Max and Bob's commentary on why this blog was established. This blog should not be your personnal venue to bash Mr. Downs. I do not agree with how the city handles some things either, but Marcus is not the "lemon" you perceive it to be. Unfortunately, you have chosen to look at your glass as being half-empty instead of half-full. Try a half-full attitude once and give us all a break.

    To "anonymous":

Before you start talking to people about reading what Max and Bob wrote on what this blog is supposed to be about, you should read and understand what they said about not posting as "ANONYMOUS". So, come back and talk to me when you've got the guts to sign your name. Or, are you afraid that someone might know who you are?

In fact, they should take off the "anonymous" listing. It should be that everyone must sign their real name. And, if they can't do that, they should not post.

Now, that is all I have to say, for now. It will be a while before I will come back on. But, I will continue to watch all of the bowing down to the Almighty Darrell. That should be a real site to see.

P.S. You can attack me all you want. I have no problem with that. And, I'm not afraid of what others think. That's why, I make sure everyone knows what I have written.

  103. I've been posting since the blog started, so I guess I have a right to speak now.

I agree with Thomas. When this blog first started we had to sign our names. There was no other way to let your voice be heard. For simplicity's sake, anonymous posts were then allowed.

I've been waiting this harangue out go because I have no place in the discussion about present-day Marcus politics. Since I don't live there, I have no right to enter into the conversation. But I have tried to chime in on other news when it surfaced.

I really don't want to lose this site. It has been a joy to get to know people I would have never talked to if it weren't for this blog and our Marcus connection.

But I no longer know who I am talking to most of the time, so I guess it has lost its purpose. No place is perfect --we all know that. But I didn't sign on for the diatribes about politics. And I don't think Thomas Jefferson would appreciate the references either.

Thanks Max and and Bob for making this blog happen. Yes, I know the difference between blogs and bulletin boards too. It doesn't make a difference what you call it. It was a great place to stop in and chat for a good long while.

  105. Max and Bob:

I am disheartened by what the blog has become the past several weeks and frankly embarrassed that such a wonderful idea created by the two of you has been commandeered by a few, converted into something so distant from your original intent.

If others want to create a blog, a website, a bulletin board or any other kind of discussion forum for complaints and personal attacks they are certainly free to do that. Instead, they apparently enjoy the audience here they may not have elsewhere.

I like this blog for the historical perspective that you two and a few others of your generation have contributed from time to time. It once was a place from which to draw inspiration, gain new insights and maybe hear from old friends and neighbors. Now, that voice has been drowned out by the opinions and perceived slights of a few who appear to have little ability to moderate their tone, identify themselves as authors of their opinions and always insist on having the last word. The blog has become predictable, tedious, principally negative and a place that I no longer look forward to visiting.

I have not contributed for some time, hoping this phase would blow over. It hasn't. Rather, a few with an agenda want to wrest your idea from you and convert it to a site more to their liking. My reaction, Bob and Max, is "no". I will support whatever approach you take, but my response to what has gone on recently is as follows:

    1. Require that all who post identify themselves.
    2. Encourage those who think this blog is "overly positive" to start their own.
    3. Suggest that people who use course language and gutter humor write as though their mother or grandfather is reading it, which, in some cases is true.
    4. If a poster has an issue or concern, refrain from making it personal, and offer a constructive solution.
    5. Before hitting "publish your comment" next time consider that creators Bob and Max Reed are now thinking about shutting the site down due to a concern over what their original concept has spawned.

What a price to pay for those who want this site to be something other than a soapbox for the disillusioned and unhappy. "Trash talking" is all the rage in sports, politics and now, in this blog. If that is to be the future of this site, sadly I will opt out.

Whatever course you choose, Bob and Max, I do want you to know that from my perspective you have given a wonderful gift to Marcus. I hope that such a good thing hasn't now soured beyond redemption.

Until the last couple of months, I never read the blog- had heard about, but hadn't posted on it. I used it as a vehicle to help the Community Center out, of which I am passionate about. A couple of times I "chirped" on various issues that Thomas said. I would hate to see the blog taken down, but I do think that you have to let the good with the bad come out. I certainly don't agree that Marcus is a Lemon... it's a great place to live and was a wonderful place to raise my children. When my parents and only brother died, the support that I got from a small town was certainly overwelming and comforting, you only get that from a small town. I will agree, I don't agree with everything that happens, but then, that's life and that's part of being an American. I say... Let the blog be as it is, we can sort the good out from the bad comments, be an adult and sign your name and be willing to take the heat for what you say, or don't say it. It's as simple as that. Like my Dad and Mom used to say... Put your big girl panties and live with it. NOW>>>>>>> before I forget... Still have some street signs left!!!!!!!!!!!

Bye the way... if you are ever in Marcus Stop down at the elevator for a free cup of coffee and a chance to sit with the regulars, they regularly discuss the past, I really should tape record some of the tales of the past that they tell!

I too, would hate to see this site taken down. I would like to at least try making it a site where people have to sign their names in order to post. That too, could probably be abused, if you come right down to it. And, if the site does come down, somebody else can start another one just like it. It isn't hard to do and I am sure someone in Marcus could figure out how to accomplish that. Then they can do whatever they want with it. I do understand that it is trying to meet two very different needs, those of residents who have moved away and those of residents still residing in Marcus. And, yes, that can be difficult. Good Luck! I am curious to see how this will play out.

I grew up with My father, Donald Simons, John Coburn, Marv Simons, Laurence Johnson, who use to chop corn for each other. Marv Simons was the "sileage packer" and Laurence would help bring in the sileage on the wagons, when it came time to fill the silos, Laurence and I would draw a circle in the dirt and play marbles while the sileage was unloading, He was the marble man! He had no mercy, sometimes he would capture my shooter marbles! When my husband and I got married Laurence gave me a bag of new marbles...he said that was for something to do on our honeymoon!! Nothing beats growing up on a farm!!! To this day I love the fall...maybe that's why I work at an Grain elevator! :)

If you are inclined to go this route let me know and I would love to see the blog continue on as you and the whole "REED" family desired it to be when you started it a few years back.

Thus foul language and offensive comments would no longer be allowed on this site, and anonymous posters would no longer have the ability to have their comments posted on this blog.

If you are interested in my being the moderator let me know and I will gladly get in touch with you guys to work out the details.

Personally it disgusts me that for many they still don't understand what your intentions are for this blog nor will they take the time to read the original premise of this blog that you originated and if those that want to highjack this blog continue to do so then I would be in full support of shutting it down.

As some others have said if there are those that want to use your blog for their agenda then make them start their own..........but to sit back and let them destroy what you joyfully and willingly started on your own accord gives no one the right to abuse the privilage of this site regardless of their futile attempts to justify their actions.

  113. I vote to continue the blog in its current form. Maybe I am too optimistic but I think that the negativity ultimately will exhaust itself and posters will again return to the purpose of the blog as stated on the home page: "to exchange notes, news, remembrances, and thoughts about life in and about Marcus, or news about one's family, friends or acquaintances."

Thanks Max and Bob for your efforts to maintain the blog. Over the past 5 years I have learned a lot about Marcusites (who knew so many writers/poets came from Marcus?), renewed a few friendships and enjoyed having memories refreshed. I look forward to learning more in the future even if we have to step through some unpleasant comments on the way.

    Onward and upward.

I think the blog should just be left alone- I agree with Kyle- the negative comments will go away, and if they don't, think of them as cheap entertainment. You can't believe how many people are reading the blog these last two months that knew it existed but didn't read it that often. Also- I'm pretty sure that there are people that blog anonymously at times that normally sign their names!

  115. Wow!! Houses in Marcus are selling like crazy! Hopefully bringing in some new families to the school system

  116. This blog has seen a lot more visitors these last couple months due to the ongoing debate. Personally, I find it a lot more entertaining when people are airing out grievances and expressing their discontentment as opposed to the innocuous, but ho-hum, discourse that usually prevails on this blog.

If this blog is to be at all honest, it will allow all views to be posted.

Everyone is going to have their opinions about Marcus, or any small town for that matter! Marcus was a WONDERFUL place to grow up. But the fact of the matter is, small towns are becoming a thing of the past. Everyone wants convenience. More and more people are moving away from the small town life.

Tammy, I think it's a GREAT idea to get flower pots to put in the downtown area. It would not be that expensive to do so either. You can purchase large ceramic pots almost anywhere, Menards, Lowe's, even Walmart. I am sure that you could even ask businesses to donate a couple bucks towards the cause to help make the front of their businesses more attractive, or better yet, perhaps each business on Main could simply put a couple pots of flowers out, that would make a tremendous difference!

Folks, you are making this too complicated! Not everything has to be a debate! Tammy is simply trying to make Marcus a little easier on the eyes, and there are very simple ways to do so!

Tammy, keep up the good work and suggestions. If I still lived in Marcus, I would be there helping you do this! I am sure if you asked the Marcus Garden Club, they would be more than happy to lend a hand!

Bloggers, have come to realize in the last month or so of posting and reading, that you cannot please everyone. Simple as that. Not everyone is going to agree, nor like each other! For those of you who live in Marcus, and still genuinely care about it's progress, STEP UP! All this bickering back and forth about tax dollars, etc isn't getting the job done. Come on Marcus, unify!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Thanks Jordan for the words of support! I appreciate it! Have a new development on the flowers, the Coop that I work for has some big empty mineral tubs that a farmer turned back into us, I used one last year to plant flowers in and it worked great after I cleaned it up. I contacted my users to ask that if they don't want the tubs to bring them up for this project, just had 5 dropped off, so if anybody wants them, they will be a first come first serve basis. They are sturdy and won't get blown over with the wind and when filled are pretty much theft proof, unless you have a forklift to lift them or two strong guys. Anyway... just throwing this out to see if we can get something rolling....

Sounds wonderful Tammy! I will be home at some point this summer, and can't wait to see the flowers! My Mom has a green thumb and I am sure she would be more than happy to help maintain the flowers. (as a matter of fact, I just spoke to her about it, and she's got some other inexpensive ideas to bring some "color" to downtown Marcus). If anyone needs proof of that, drive past 304 N Walnut. My parents lawn ALWAYS looks spectacular! :)

Ya know, years ago when i had my beauty salon uptown on Main street, I decided to put a pot of flowers in front of my shop. It did not last long...someone was really nasty and overturned the pot.. and you know who you are!! What a shame that someone would have to be so mean and nasty!! Just a thought for those thinking about putting flower pots out on Main St....

  123. I've had good luck with the two containers that I've had in front of the elevator, and it would be easy to pilfer them. Haven't had any stolen or damaged. But I have had the flowers on my folks grave stolen numerous times.... hope they went to a good home. I'd be afraid to steal anything at a cemetary for fear a bolt of lightening would come out of the sky!

  124. I heard the MMC Jazz Band was competing at State yesterday. I made a call to a parent and found out the earned 8th place and a trophy! Congratulations to the great musicians! I think the school should be proud and "toot their own horn" a little bit, there is nothing on the school website.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Tammy, like your idea of the flowers in town. Here is another idea that could set Marcus apart around the state as well. Click on my link below. If you have ever been in Texas in the springtime you will have seen the wildflowers blooming all over the state highways. Texas promotes this and cultivates the growing of wild flowers. For some reason (I expect expense)Iowa does not.

I think it would be fun to plant wild flowers in the ditches on highway 3 from the Junction to one mile west on both sides of the highway. It would take some coordination with the county and state so that no one would spray the ditches while establishing the wild flowers, but if it could be pulled off I think it would look beautiful and possibly inspire other communities to do the same.

I realize I don't live in Marcus and this would take a lot of work, money and time so take the idea for what it is worth. But I bet if anyone asked on this site for a donation to accomplish this task funds would be forthcoming.

  126. The MMC internet site is shameful. It must not be maintained by anyone. I looked today and it still listed four school board members whose terms expired in September of last year. Technology is nice, and I'm sure the site was impressive when it was put up, but it should be shelved if it is going to show outdated and incorrect information.

  127. Thomas John WillemsApril 15, 2010

    K. Dorr:

The State of Iowa has already started planting wildflowers, native to Iowa, along the Highways. It's part of the Iowa DOT/DNR Roadside Planting Program. The document that explains it can be found here: http://www.iowadot.gov/plant_guide/plant_profiler.pdf

It's a .pdf file. However, all of the information is contained within to let Iowans/former Iowans know what the State of Iowa and Iowa DNR is doing to enrich the beauty around Iowa with plants from the past. It's a worthy program.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I have seen that before Thomas. Thank you for the link. I think the state tends to over promote native prairie grasses though, I'd like to see more emphasis on just wild flowers like the State of Texas does.

"Persecution Complex" is just a glorified term for "Paranoid".

The truth is: "I'm not paranoid. I'm Anti-social." That's what I was diagnosed with years ago. Mainly, it's because I don't like being around people. I don't agree with the way they speak with two tongues. And, I don't agree with a small group of people wanting to impose their will on others, just because they can't mind their own business and take care of their own houses.

So, you're using a psychological term that doesn't pertain to me. So, stop that. And, use something more fitting.

  150. I found this concise discussion guideline on another forum.. Maybe apply to marcus blog?

"We encourage lively discussion and dissent. Constructive criticism is welcome. However, if a comment flames an author, a person, or a topic (or is considered spam) it will be deleted. Profanity will not be tolerated. Be nice. Have fun!

(Flaming, also known as bashing, is hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaming_%28internet%29 )

    ReplyDelete
  151. Baritone Bob, I would apply that definition to this blog.

    K.Dorr

    ReplyDelete
  152. Thomas John WillemsApril 21, 2010

"Flaming" - intensely emotional; ardent; passionate - Webster's New World Dictionary.

If there's no "flaming", as you've stated should maybe used, then no one could express passion about the topics they post. That would take away the individualism and the Freedom of Speech. And, it would go back to the objection that I raised with only having "nice" things to say. Mainly, it would also hinder criticism because a lot of people don't like to hear the truth. And, they take offense when you say something about what's really going on, whether it's within the family or community. So, any form of criticism could be viewed as "flaming", if one person takes offense to what a person writes.

I enjoy reading the blog everyday but lately there is alot of people on here that are complaining about how are town is run.
I know that in a small town you are not going to make everyone happy with the choices that need to be made. I know we are going to hear the good and the bad comments on here.
I would not like to make those decisions that our city counsel makes or our school board. I am sure that out town is not any different then any other town. The grass is not always greener on the other side.
I am involved in the MarcEtte's and I like being able to voice my opinion at our meetings but not everyone always agrees so you have to compermise.
I think being on a committe or be involved in something is very unrewarding and that people make it hard on those people that make those decisions that no one else wants to make.
I think people need to remember that when things don't go there way regardless of what they think. Maybe people need to get more involved in our great town by volunteering to help with town projects.
Just an idea I will get off my soap box now!! :)

    I disagree, K. Dorr:

If one interprets the statement, made by Paul, according to Baritone Bob's definition of "Flaming", it can be construed as a "Flaming" statement. Therefore, if Baritone Bob wanted to run it under the "Flaming" scenerio, Paul's statement as well as many of the other ones(mine included) would have to be deleted. In fact, no one could post anything on here. Because, one can claim that only "nice" comments are "Flaming", since some may find that kind of behavior offensive. This is the part of his statement that can be considered "Flaming" - "You are a guest posting on this blog, so stop argueing wih the man and just do it."

Beside that, we don't work for Paul nor are we under his command. Therefore, he has no right to dictate what a person can say or write nor can he (or anyone else) take away a person's Freedom of Speech, just because he/they doesn't like what they have to say.

I've never hindered a person's Freedom of Speech, because EVERYONE is protected under the First Amendment of the Constitution. And, that includes the internet and other forms of media.

Paul Wilkins made a personal attack against my comment. Therefore, I had every right to say what I did. If Paul wants to take issue with it, that's fine. He can take issue with it. Also, I have been polite on this site. There are so many things that I could bring up, but I haven't.

And, I am attempting to do something about the way things are in this town.

As people have said, "Just go out and volunteer." Well, it's not as easy as all the people with the "names" and "money of this town claim it to be. I have inquired about the Fire Department and the Marcus Fair Board. But, a person has to sponsor you in order to be a part of them. So, you know where that leaves me.

Therefore, I'm going about change through the use of Politics, the Constitution of the United States of America, and the Freedoms that GOD has given to us and are spelled out in the Constitution of the United States of America.

And, Cam is only defending what he knows is right. Unlike, the people around this town that are power-hungry, control freaks and speakers with two tongues.

BTW, I am on many sites. So, I don't need your attention. I am doing what is right for this town, protecting the Freedoms that people want to take away and destroy.

Yes, GOD did give us our Rights. The Founding Fathers laid those Rights out within the Constitution of the United States of America. They made sure that WE THE PEOPLE were protected from having those Rights and Freedoms destroyed by the Government and others. Maybe, you people should be watching Glenn Beck and other Republicans/Conseratives that know this. Also, you should be reading what the Founding Fathers of this Nation wrote. They spell it out, as well.

Stop talking to me. I DON'T CARE. I will still post. So, go on with your lives of bowing to the City Council and those that are power hungry, control freaks and people whom talk with two-tongues. It doesn't bother me one bit. And, neither does what others say about me. I've stated that time-and-time again. If I was so worried about what others thought, I'd never say anything. But, apparently, that's not the case, is it? I don't worry about it.

    ReplyDelete

And? What does this have to do with your original point that our constitutional rights are from god? You're contradicting yourself. C'mon Tommy. Can't you keep your thoughts together for even one post?

"Maybe, you people should be watching Glenn Beck and other Republicans/Conservatives that know this"

This is a laugh. Glenn Beck is an unhinged lunatic who spouts these baseless conspiracy theories on a daily basis and naive fools like you fall for it. He's a clown who only cares about ratings. As are the overwhelming majority of Republican/Conservative pundits.

But hey,if you want to let corporate shills like Beck exploit you, knock yourself out.

I got a kick out of reading this blog, but now I shake my head in disappointment at all the immaturity we have in grown adults who are commenting on here. So what if Thomas wants to speak his mind? Are you not speaking your mind as well?! I find Marcus to be a decent town. It's not where I grew up, but it's hard to find small towns where people are so caring for others, and where the town is trying to better itself and those who live in it. I really think that when others talk bad about you, it's only because they want to be like you or are jealous of you. Do me a favor and grow up. If you can't post your name on rude and disgruntled comments, then don't bother commenting at all. You people act worse than 7 or 8 year olds. I see little kids with better behaviors than some of you sour-pusses out there. Be respectful. You may not agree with what someone has to say on here, then do yourself a favor and stop reading it. Or if you decide to be ridiculous and put a negative remark on here, then sign your full name so people can see what kind of fool you are making of yourself.

As I said, my hometown is not Marcus, but it sure is a nice community to be able to raise your kids and have others behind you when there are hard times. Yes, I may not agree with some things the counsel or city does/says, but that's part of life, isn't it??

All I can say is grow up and learn to respect people a bit more.
