Looking forward to the fair. Hopefully the weather is going to be nice. There are some fun activities going on during fair time. The MarcEtte's are doing a Tug-O-War. Don't forget the 5K run /walk Saturday morning. The water fights and Mud Volleyball. These are just a few fun things to do at the fair. Hope to see you all at the fair.

    MEMORIES OF THE MOMENTS

It’s August and Fair time, and as the Marcus Historical Society enters its second year of operation, I understand there is a need to expand its initial collection and to get new members. The group has done a remarkably wonderful job in refurbishing the building (the old Lutheran church) and acquiring some great artifacts and memorabilia representing the town’s history.

But there is more to be done to enlarge the collection. There is room now for additions to the current holdings—and the Society is soliciting new acquisitions to help create and foster new exhibits.

Not everything, of course, is welcome. It must have a Marcus connection. So one’s collection of toothpicks (as a member of the National Toothpick Holders’ Society) or donations of a toilet seat (like those in that museum in San Antonio, Texas) or stuff like that in Boston’s Museum of Dirt are not welcome.

But your dad’s pictures of early Marcus or posters or Grandma’s dresses or pioneers’ handicrafts and tools are most welcome. Memorabilia from early in this century to the present will help make the past accessible.

For unless we keep history alive, we lose its real meaning. It’s always changing, and we are inescapably a part of it.

History (with a capital H) is what we got in school—wars and dates and big events; history (with the little h) is our history. It’s personal. It connects us with ourselves.

The society is dedicated to helping us tell one another where we were, where we are, and where we are going. It hopes to make the past less abstract and provides some perspective, helping make our town more familiar and real.

So dig into that attic, rummage around the house, and share with the Society those artifacts you have been hoarding. Or provide the Society with a written family history for its Genealogy Corner. If you are interested in finding out about your family tree, the Genealogy Department will do some research for you. Call Arlene Hollenback (503-577-0687) or Linda Spieler (712-225-3681) or e-mail genote@hotmail.com for more info.

Visit the facility and the Society’s booth at the fair. And/or go to the Society’s web site at
    www.marcushistoricalsociety.org/
or click on the link on the right side of this Blog to learn about the group’s latest doings.

And if you aren’t a member, join up. The website has the proper information to do so. Dues are only $10 a year.

Contact Maxine Shea, President, (at 712-376-2301 or Shea@midlands.net) or any Board member if you have questions about membership, or to donate Marcus memorabilia. It will help us retain the things and moments that made us who we are.

  4. Some last minute additions to the Marcus Fair:
Friday evening in the 'Hall of Progress' we will give a young local band called 'Cheers' a chance to showcase their talents. They will play from approximately 9:30 to 11:30 and will follow the group "True Emotion" on the main stage.

Also, the Boyscouts will have a Tomahawk throw just to the south of Centennial Hall. Stop and check it out.

Don't forget...Advanced ride tickets are available from many local businesses.

    See You at the Fair!

  6. Hey I am looking at moving to the Marcus area with some young boys. I want to know what sports your school is excelling at or in the near future will. From what I have heard your basketball team is absolutely horrendous, what is the football, wrestling, basketball, track, and baseball teams like? These boys want to go to a school that is competitive in sports and I want a good education for them actually I want both. I have looked at a few districts surrounding the Lemars area. Any help would be great.

  7. The boys baseball team just finished the best season in school history, fell 2 games short of state. The basketball team is on the rise. Pat Bird is as good a coach as we've seen in many years, and the talent is there as well. I for one have high hopes for the next 3-4 years and more. The wrestling team continues to send individuals to state year in and year out, and the track team had one of the best years I can remember also, breaking many records along the way.
Football has started again and almost 45 players are out, many underclassmen but the future is bright. Hope you consider Marcus, its a great town and school too.

REMSEN, Iowa -- Two men were arrested Thursday in Plymouth County on burglary charges, after a search of one of their homes turned up stolen tools.

Kyle Allen Hodges, 23, of Marcus, Iowa, and Bradley Adam Bond, 19, of Paullina, Iowa, are each charged with third-degree burglary, a class D felony.

The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office said in a statement released today that on July 5 Roger Bohnenkamp reported a burglary at his hog confinement in rural Remsen. The sheriff's office said someone entered the building and removed numerous power tools, wrench's and screw drivers.

Deputies searched a residence Hodges was leasing, 48854 140th St., on Aug. 6, 2009. The sheriff's office said they recovered several items Bohnenkamp reported stolen, as well as other power tools, a lawn mower, welders, and hand tools. Some of the items are believed to be missing property from burglaries in Cherokee County, according to the sheriff's office.

Hodges and Bond were arrested and taken to the Plymouth County Jail.

The sheriff's office said the investigation is continuing and more charges are expected.

As the family of Kyle Hodges we are not to proud of him right now either. But as the sex offender charge you have no idea about that so please don't act like you know what you are talking about. I will be the bigger person here and I hope that nothing like this ever happens to your family. I don't appreciate seeing how everyone is excited about our fair and our sports teams and then someone has to throw this into the middle of it. But on a good note I hope everyone is enjoying the Marcus Fair as much as I am.
    Sincerely,

What a great fair. The weather was good. We had a great turn out for the MarcEtte 5k run/ walk. The tug-o-war was fun to watch. Hopefully this event will grow. The fireworks where very awesome what a great addition. We where lucky to have our daughter Shana Ames crown Little Miss Marcus. I think the entertainment was great. Thanks to all the hard work on another great Marcus Fair.

  15. Julie--I know what you mean about missing a fair, because I missed last year. It was a great fair. My hat is off to the fair board members for another successful fair. And I think part of what makes it enjoyable is the number of people who come back for the fair. It's a great time to connect with old friends with all the class reunions being held!

  16. I hope the people of Marcus have some proud feeling for the wonderful time of the Marcus Fair. It is truly a highlight of our year to return at fair time - to see old friends, the tractor pull, step in 'umba' in the cowbarn, walk through the beautiful flower exhibits, take my grandson (who is named Marcus!) through the petting zoo, and on and on.... Having lunch at the church stand, you can feel the goodness of a place where everyone is your friend. I commend all those that spend hours and days making it such a wonderful tradition. And the Charades were great, too!
    Many thanks,

I was back in town for my class reunion. What a great time. Saw lots of people. Went to the Fair Sunday. Marcus can be proud. Our small Minnesota town is struggling with trying to have a fun celebration for the community. The Marcus Fair is what we are aiming for.Comunity pride was so evident as we strolled through the grounds. Congratulations to all who worked so hard to make it another great Marcus Fair experience.

Looking South down Elm Street. After Dutch Elm disease wiped out many Elms in Marcus I planted several Dutch Elm disease resistant varities in my parents parking and a couple in the parking at the High School. Some have died but the ones left seem to be resistant to the disease. Elm Street is earning it's name back!

Hi all. My family and I had a blast at the fair! We didn't go last year so we made up for it this year. I was a little disappointed in the tractor pull as there weren't as many as 2 years ago but my 3 year old LOVED it! My sister in law came up and we went to the hypnotist Terry Gahm, and that was so much fun and so funny. I can't wait until next year.

Can you believe that school is back? This is my sons first year and Carla is his bus driver, she is great and MMC is so friendly and very cooperative. Me being from a big city I never had this communication with schools before. I can't wait unitl he starts kindergarten and actually goes to MMC.

Another thing is that come May 2010I will be doing daycare YAY. I got some stuff from Donna Bird, thank you Donna. I have the registration packet filled out but I am not going to do anything until May because we are doing some remodeling in the home. I will hopefully be able to get my name out there, Thank you Sheila Booth and Donna Bird.

Well that is all for now I guess. I hope to get to meet some people this year.

  24. Well I took the Elevated photos from the top of Sand's elevator but I asked permission first!!

I suppose in the old days of 30+ years ago some kid would have sneaked up the elevator but I wasn't about to do that!

  25. The photos are great, Kurt! An idea would be to add a place for local photos to the Marcus Web site -- to show people around the town a bit more. Again, I know someone has to do that, but it might be a fun project for some scout troop or 4-H group -- we forget that young people can get involved too. I saw the amazing work that (I wish I could remember the names) that two young people did restoring the beautiful bannister from Marcus Middle School (or the old high school, depending on when you graduated). It's in the basement of the Historical Society right now. It was a 4-H project that won a top award at the Iowa State Fair. Beautiful!

  31. Hi all its Tonya again. I have a few questions if anybody can answer them. As you all know from my last blog on here I am starting a daycare in May 2010 but I would love to get to know some people first. I was wondering how to get involved with any of the community organizations and what they are and what they do. For example the Jaycee's and the Marcettes. I think that would be a great way to meet people and get out and talk to other humans, as I am now talking baby talk on a daily basis. It would be great to have other people to talk to other than my husband and children. Don't get me wrong I love talking to them, but when its nothing but how my husbands day went at work or my children crying, and telling me they need a bandaid it gets kind of old and I need something new to do. So if anybody could direct me in the right way I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thank you in advance,
    Tonya Dempster

  32. I'd say the MarcEttes could introduce themselves. And since you are going to have a daycare, you should introduce yourself to the kindergarten teacher, elementary principal, the local ministers, the local businesses like Staples, where you can make your upcoming daycare program known and make some connections with people who know parents of young children. Go to the library and join some local groups. Tell the fair board you want to get involved and go to their meetings. Go to the school board meetings to find out what's on people's minds. Your husband can watch the baby at night while you get out and learn more about what makes this town tick. Don't expect people to come to you -- you've got to reach out. Midwesterners aren't pushy.

To Tonya I am a MarcEtte and we would love to have you come to one of our meetings. We meet every 2nd Wednesday on the month at Farmers State Bank in the community room. Our meetings start at 8:00 and last about an hour or so. When I first moved to Marcus I joined MarcEtte's and I met a lot of great people and started getting involved. MarcEtte's do alot for the great community that we live in. If you are interested I am in the phone book(Todd Ames) and I can pick you up and take you to the meeting. WE have a lot of fun and it's a great way to meet people.

  39. On behalf of the Marcus Fair Board I'd like to 'Thank' everyone that helped to make the 73rd Marcus Community Fair a success.
It takes so many volunteers to make it all work and we appreciate the help and support we receive. I've had a lot of people pat me on the back, but the truth is, there are 17 other hard working fair board members that take a lot of pride in what they do, we have many other volunteers that do a variety of tasks, AND we have a community that whole heartedly supports this annual event.
As long as the volunteering and commuunity support remains, I'm sure our fair will continue to thrive.
So 'Thanks' everyone. Pat yourselves on the back for making helping to make it all worthwhile.

    Looking ahead:
The 74th Marcus Fair will be: August 12-15, 2010

The 75th Marcus Fair will be: August 11-14, 2011

Plans are already underway for both. And yes, the Westernaires are scheduled to be back for the big 75th.

  43. Thanks to everybody for guiding me on where to go and thanks to Kristi Ames. I have never lived in a small town like this town, i have lived in small towns before, but never so community oriented and family oriented. its great. I don't think my husband will mind watching the kids for an hour every 2nd wednesday. But thank you again, I wasn't sure where I should advertise me doing daycare. There are so many other daycares around town and I'm not sure if mine is going to float very well, but sometimes you have to sink to swim.

  44. Thank you Sherry Ogren for stopping by today and giving be the thing about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. That is a great program and I filled it out and I will send it out today. You can never have too many books. Books open up the child's imagination in so many ways and adults too. My kids love reading books and looking at the pictures and then playing out what we read. This really is great and I do appreciate it.

  45. Kristi-

We will be travelling through Marcus next month on a cross country trip. My husbands grandmother (in her 90's) has requested a stop in her hometown. She has not been to Marcus since the 80's and I would love to surprise her with a cookbook when we stop in town. Is there a place/store in town that may have them to buy on the spur of the moment? I am not sure of our exact dates of travel yet. Also, since I am not familiar with the area, can someone tell me how far it is to the cemetery in Cherokee? This is another place she wishes to stop. I plan on showing her the pictures from this blog. I know it will make her so happy. Thank you all for sharing!
