September 2009 discussion

60 comments:

  1. Just sending a note to everyone in Marcus to thank them again for all their help to celebrate my Grandma Vivian Wiedemeier Morton's life last year (she passed on 8/26/08 and was buried 9/3/08). It's still really hard for me to use her name in the past tense.

All the best to everyone there.

    Best,
    Shelly

  2. I just wanted to say thank you to those who replied about buying the cookbook in town (August discussion). I will certainly stop by the drugstore to get one when we pass through town. Thanks again!

  3. Michele, your Grandmother had the coolest backyard in town. All of us kids in the neighborhood loved playing in that large expanse. It was a wonderful football field for many of us.

  7. To Kristi,
I went to the Marcette's meeting on Wednesday. It was alot of fun, and I am planning on joining them. I bought a cookbook on Wed. also, but I forgot to give the money to Darcy today. Is there anyway I can give you the money? I don't want that to look bad on my part. Thank you for getting a hold of me about the Marcette's I hope I can become unshy!

  8. To Tonya:
I am glad you made it to the meeting. Sorry I wasn't able to make it. I am sure we can break you out of your shyness. If you want to drop off a check for the cookbook that is fine. I am usually home by 5:00.

  9. to Kristi,
Ok, it will have to be on Friday September 25. If that is ok. Sorry something unexpected came up. I had alot of fun.

  10. Could Tonya and Kristi exchange emails or become Facebook friends, the blog has kind of become the Tonya and Kristi show. While I am all for the Marcetts and meeting new people in the community; I feel uncomfortable when the conversation has now turned to discussing finances or lack thereof. After all don’t the two of you only live 4 houses apart, stop by to discuss such private matters.

  11. To whomever:
I am sorry if I have stepped on your toes. I was just trying to help someone out in our commuity. Maybe there are other people in our commuity that don't know about the MarcEtte meetings and are interested.I will quit communicating on the blog. I guess if you would sign your name then I could call you and we could communicate appropriatly instead of on the blog.

  12. Wait a minute! I thought it was most appropriate for Tonya to use our "friendly" blog as an introduction to Marcus. Then I was most pleased that Kristi made the effort to welcome Tonya who made reference to being very shy. That reprimand by anonymous seemed to be totally out of order. Kristi, don't abandon the Blog. My family was chastised a few weeks ago for usurping the Blog, but we survived and are still blogging. We want you to do the same. And once more I must repeat my contention that anyone unwilling to sign his/her name to a Blog should think twice before commenting.

  13. To Anonymous,
Sorry for making you feel uncomfortable. I figured this is a great way to get myself out there and taking a step out of my shy shell. However, yes Kristi and I may only live 4 houses apart, but we are not always at our house or in town for that matter. From now on if Kristi could call me we could talk about the Marcettes and our communtity more, sinse a community blog isn't working out anymore.

  14. Tonya: Here I am blogging again--probably irritating good ol' Anonymous all over the place, but I want to urge you, as I did Kristi, not to give up on us Marcus Bloggers. We are really a pretty nice bunch and most of us want to welcome you to our midst and help you over your shyness. Keep blogging! Hope to meet you sometime soon.

  15. I agree with Margaret. Besides, no one else had anything to say during that timeframe. How about getting the ball rolling with a discussion, as both Tonya and Kristi have done in the past?

For one thing, I am wondering if Tom Wurth might ever consider singing at a future Marcus Fair. I checked out his YouTube video and I have put it up on Facebook. Just wondering if Tom would consider it ... or maybe he's already doing a tour next summer.

Are the trees starting to turn out there yet?

  16. FROM Anonymous:
I would like to start by saying how sorry I am to have upset the entire Marcus Blog community, especially Kristi and Tonya. What I wrote, I wrote without thinking. I was thrown off by the conversation about not being unable to afford to join the Marcetts, I was taught that financial problems are personal and not to be shared with the whole world. I guess I was wrong in thinking that more people would share my opinion on that. Reading what I have today, I suppose that I could have worded my last post differently, as to point more of the focus on keeping private things private, than the use of the blog to hold conversations. After all that is what the blog was designed to do, help people get and stay connected to this wonderful town. Again I would like to say I am sorry for writing without thinking.
    TO Kristi and Tonya:
I hope that you can move past this and continue to use the Marcus Blog. Kristi you are so good at sharing about local happenings and upcoming event, that it would be a shame to lose you now. Tonya it is great to see that you are enjoying living in Marcus now. Sorry for writing without thinking.

  17. Very nice touch, "anonymous". It takes a big person to do what you just did. Not many do anymore, so it was refreshing to read.

Let's get back to our community conversation. I'm like Julie, my mom and others... I wish all of you out there who may just be readers would contribute. When I was back home for the Fair I heard several comment on how they enjoyed reading the Blog but felt uncomfortable adding their written comments. Don't. It's always great to hear from new people. Please join in.

  19. It's all cool. Nothing to get riled up about. There was an article in the Marcus News about the news students in school -- including the Remingtons. I'm wondering what the class size is at the high school now.

  20. That should be new students.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I will keep blogging because I feel very strong about our community. We have quite afew new students in our MMC school which is great. I believe there are maybe 15 new students in our school system. There are some farmers already combining there beans. Fall truly is just around the corner. I love the changing of the leaves that have started taking place. Falls is just a few days away and the weather has been warmer then our August weather it seems.

  22. Gray Matters: "Amherst to Amherst"
    Wednesday, September 16, 2009
    Margaret Dorr

It was a privilege to spend a recent morning with a delightful couple who were in Cherokee County on a most unusual mission. Robert "Bob" and Jackie Tuthill of Amherst, Massachusetts, had contacted Linda Burkhart of the Sanford Museum some time ago explaining their mission which was to visit all towns in the United States named Amherst.

Their on-line search had indicated that there was one in our county. She told them that we have an Amherst Township and a Marcus-Amherst Cemetery, but no town by that name. This still satisfied their requirements so we were on their itinerary.

I had advised Linda that our ultimate authority on the cemetery, as well as on most all else historical, would be Fred Wilkens, current Cemetery Association Secretary. As a result, our visit took place on the Wilkens' charming patio.

Dr. Tuthill is a Professor Emeritus from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst whose field was epidemiology, the study of diseases. His doctorate is a Ph D rather than an MD, and his major emphasis was on environmental issues, determining their adverse effects, particularly on children.

Wife, Jackie, had retired from her position as Administrative Assistant to the Faculty Dean of Hampshire College. Despite these impressive titles, they were extremely down-to-earth and easy to visit with. To begin, Bob told us that having lived in Amherst, Mass. all of their lives it had never occurred to them that there were other towns bearing that name.

Then, in 1994, they decided to travel up the Ontario River Valley, across the Canadian border, to Amherst, Nova Scotia on their vacation. To their surprise, the route took them through Amherst, New Hampshire and Amherst, Maine. This piqued their interest so they went on-line and foound that there are sixteen Amhersts in our country. A few years later, by the time they had both retired, their goal was set. They were determined to visit all of those sites and to write a book, titled "Amherst to Amherst."

Their first trek took place in 1998. Now, after several other such jaunts, they have only one site left to visit--Amherst, Ohio. It will be their destination in 2010. They usually fly into a major airport, rent a car and proceed from there.

This time they flew into Minneapolis, visited Amherst, Wis. and Amherst, Minn. which is in the scenic, southeastern corner of that state. What had once been a thriving little town is no longer viable. In fact, it was referred to as a "Sleeping Village" marked by a sign bearing the name AMHERST with a bullet hole through it. How better to indicate that the town is "shot?"

They found that Amherst, S.D., which is located in Marshall County in the far northeast corner of that state, is also unincorporated. But there again the Tuthills were able to garner some intriguing stories. From there, they came to our Amherst Township.

Here are a few of the items of information Bob and Jackie seek at each Amherst. 1) How it was named. 2) When it was founded and by whom. 3) Noted persons from that Amherst. 4) Anecdotes from the town's history. Their list is comprehensive. It is going to be hard to wait for their project to be finished and their small volume, "Amherst to Amherst," to be published. They warned us to be patient so we must try.

A footnote: I want each of you who know Fred Wilkens, to join me in pleading with him to record his stories. He claims he has too much to do to write his "Memoirs." Granted, he's a busy man, but we mustn't lose his recollections. Like the Tuthill's stories of Amhersts, his tales of Marcus and Cherokee County are priceless.

  23. When I read Margaret's column (above), I had forgotten that we do have an Amherst Township in Cherokee County.

I also enjoyed the column because I just visited Amherst, MA, in early September. It's about two hours away from my home in Rhode Island. It'a a beautiful college town in the Berkshires, so the morning mist was still rising when I pulled in. Amherst is home to several colleges and, more importantly (to me at least), where Emily Dickinson lived and wrote.

  24. Hi, this is Margaret Dorr's daughter, Ann. I've been reading the blog this week and read the little set-to recently where some anonymous 'blog police' called out two named bloggers who looked to be having a very cordial and productive chat on the blog. I thought it interesting that the 'blog police' chose to remain anonymous, even when s/he apologized. My take, Tonya and Kristi, keep on blogging. That's what it is for. This struck me as a petty, small town thing that had nothing to do with the two identified bloggers and spoke volumes about the anonymous 'blog police'. Life's too short to let something that petty bother either one of you lovely women. Blog on . . . . . .

  27. I think we've all experienced enough rudeness in this world in the past few weeks. Please don't let this site take that weak and tired path.

Let's get back to our common thread -- Marcus, Iowa. I've just begun reading a book called Little Heathens, by Mildred Armstrong Kalish, which Julie Roethler Hoeg suggested as a great read on my class Web site.

It's about an Iowa woman's memories of her childhood growing up during the Depression. I'd love to hear Marcus residents offer their memories of those Depression years -- the toughest times, the stories of strength, what stays with you. Maybe some of you have heard stories from your parents or grandparents -- you can pass them on here.

Maybe these are the stories we need to hear right now as our country struggles to find common ground and solutions to tough problems that work for all.

I know you're out there, reading and thinking you should offer something -- but never stepping up. If you think others (like me) are hogging the site, maybe it's only because we don't want to see it die, maybe we do want to keep this connection alive.

And, yes, I do have a life. It doesn't take more than a few minutes to write down a few lines.

We've been here for almost five years -- no reason to let it scrape bottom now.

Although I didn't live through THAT Depression, I do remember my father talking about it and his constant warning that it could happen again. I, being the "young, wet behind the ears" kid, thought to myself "that it could never happen again. We have all kinds of safeguards and laws in place that render that impossible". Boy, was I wrong. Does that me Dad was right? Oh my ! ! !

Due to a recent article in the Marcus News, I feel compelled to stand up for MMC athletics. As a parent of a former MMC athlete, I have witnessed in person the dedication and committment by the MMC coaching staff. As a society, are we really so obsessed with winning, and our own ambitions, that we are willing to print an article that insults the very individuals that work so hard everyday to help this school. I'm pretty sure MMC coaches don't do it for the money, nor do they deserve to be thrown under the wheel for lack of state titles. I am embarassed to live in a commmunity where someone, who obviously knows nothing about running a team, nor coaching a sport in general, can insult the individuals who are trying to make this a better place to live. We are producing some outstanding young individuals at MMC and I feel sorry that this has happened. If people take a good hard look at the current situation, they will see that MMC is full of young athletes and building a successful program takes time. MMC is behind you and keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I AGREE. WHOEVER WROTE THE ARTICLE ABOUT MMC ATHLETICS SHOULD BE EMBARASSED AND SHOULD KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE THEY OPEN THIER MOUTH. HERE IS A PIECE OF ADVISE, SHADOW A COACH FOR A WEEK AND THEN WRITE AN ARTICLE THAT HAS SOME VALUABLE COMMENTS!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm guessing the uproar is in response to the article in the marcus news. If read with a truly open mind, you will understand that whoever wrote it, did so with very much knowledge of athletics and our team in general along without calling anyone out by name. The TEAM was not run down or badly spoken of, it was pointed out that we have many talented athletes on the team.
But anyone who has seen all 4 games so far, as i have, can not deny we are badly outcoached and our strategy does not fit our personnel. That article was very well written with many important FACTS..many of which more than one player on the team will agree with. Say what you want about the article, but it was well written and spoke the truth. We are outcoached every game and cannot just use youth as an excuse. Changes are needed!

    ReplyDelete
  32. tsk tsk. This is a great topic of conversation and invites a variety of viewpoints. But you anonymous posters are all COWARDS for not signing your names to your opinions. Pity.

ps. I wish the article were available on the web.

  33. I am a MMC football player and to have someone trash coach cave, coach mohning, coach fish, and coach bidner sets me off. Our coaches have done a wonderful job. They have worked to find the best team possible. You also hav e to look at our numbers we have around fourty players almost have are freshman and three seniors. If you think we need to see changes than I would like to see all the anonymous writers that are saying all these things about how we have been embarrassing ourselves to try and do what our coaches do every day. We are lucky to heave the coaching staff that we have. They are doing better than any other coach we could have. Face it we are young we have 6 freshman starting and I wouldn't be surprised to see more step up and play varsity. We may not have a good record but that doesn't mean thats the coaches fault. Look at the teams we have face three are ranked in the top 10 in Iowa. They have a combined record of 11-1 and the one loss was bishop gerighan loss to clay central. Records dont matter we are still a team and we are still improving but even better than that we are haveing fun so if you think that we are doing so bad you can keep it to your self or do something about it.

I guess I must weigh in about editing the Blog to knock out negative comments. I don’t believe that is wise.

The Marcus Blog was created as a vehicle to exchange news, ideas, and thoughts about our beloved town. Everyone and every opinion should be available to all.

The exception would be if a comment is obscene or libelous. Then that posting should be—and will be—taken off and not permitted to be posted on the Blog by our son—Baritone Bob, the Webmaster.

I share with him (and a number of other participants) the thought that one should sign one’s name on the posting, rather than be an “anonymous” contributor. Most newspapers do not print anonymous Letters to the Editor. Signing one’s name to one’s opinion is in the best traditions of journalism, free speech, and American democracy.

  39. It's very easy to figure out. In fact (if I were an investor) I'd be mad if they didn't do what they are doing now!

If you can buy an existing plant for $10 million vs. spending $50 million to build your own, I'd buy the existing plant all day long. It's a no brainer. Yeah, you could keep the plant at home, spend the $50 million, then go broke in less than a year then what do you have? No plant, no jobs, and no money.

If you spend the $10 million you have a plant, no jobs in Marcus (granted), but any local investors will spend their earnings locally if the investment pays off. And the chances of their investment paying off are FAR greater buying an existing plant than building a new one. It is just the reality right now.

  40. Looks like the Marcus News will print an editorial without a name of a writer. My subscription to this newspaper and I use that term loosely will now be CANCELLED!!! I recommend others do this as a show of support to your community by saying you will not support a paper that will smear mud in the faces of hard working young men of your community. Remember football is a game not life folks. A great coach once said if all I do is teach you to tackle and block then I have failed as a coach. Football and sports in general at this level are for teaching life's lessons. Sometimes you win, some times you lose but smearing mud in someones face is never right. I wish the coward who wrote that article would step up so the entire community would know who it is. I challenge everyone in the community to rally behind the Eagles, even if you like me are hundreds of miles away or you live right there. Remember this is your community and you should support it win or lose!! GO EAGLES

.500 isn't the worst thing in the world. It seems to me we want to give blue ribbons and trophies to kids for anything these days. There is a thing called working for it. If you have a young team who works hard and loses. The hard work might pay off the next year and they may get some wins. A life lesson is then learned by young men working their tails off. Isn't that why you want your kids to play sports, join the band or whatever. I tell my boys to practice hard and whatever happens.. happens.

I thought that I would not write for a while due to all the drama we had on here recently and I thought it be wise if I gave that a break and let people cool down a little bit. I guess I don't really have alot to say right now, not much has changed. My son was in his first parade last friday, that is pretty interesting and he had a blast and even threw me a tootsie roll. My husband may be a supervisor. we are working on our house, I guess its the furnace we work on first since fall is here and its getting cold.

  47. Kurt...I respect your opinion, but I do disagree. The plant was not bought for $10 million it was $13. You do not know that you are getting a functional plant. No warranties or technology provider guarantees. The biodiesel industry has made a lot of changes to the spec's fuel must meet. Is this plant capable of doing that? You mentioned the investor...20% of your money went to the board who was responsible for bankrupting the plant your buying. Plus, those board members get seats on your board...and cannot be voted off. Who can run and modify the plant? My point is there are way too many unknowns for $20 sum million of Marcus money. Not to mention...the only thing either board has proven is that managing money is not a strength.

  48. I would like to support whoever wrote the article about supporting us football players. The anonymous article in the newspaper was cowardly, ignorant, and selfish. None of which are qualities that are coaches teach us. If you have a problem either keep it to yourself or at least have the stomach to sign it. What do you even expect to accomplish with the article? We support our coaches and were having fun despite our record. There's no possible way that you have spent as much time analyzing each individual on our team as our coaches have, and if you're information is based on the comments of someone on the team than they are obviously biased. I highly doubt that a high school student has more coaching knowledge than our coaches. Therefore I don't believe that you know who should and shouldn't be playing. We work extremely hard everyday to bring our team back up to a high level of competition, so for you to say something like that publicly (but anonymously) is just a kick in the face. I can guarantee you we will use this ignorant act as motivation to become a better team. We will prove this Friday nights. Instead of complaining, how about supporting us through the season like a good citizen of our hometown of Marcus, Iowa should do.

Exactly WHAT, since last Monday, have you people been writing about, re MMC athletics?

Our September 17 Marcus News arrived in yesterday's mail, and we can find nothing in it that disparages the boys' basketball program. Quite a lot of reporting on other MMC athletics, which is admirable.

Just realized that your grandmother passed away on my birthday....Augst 26.

Like my brother said we had many a great night playing in her backyard with the Roese boys,Nelson boys, Gates boys, Haines boys, Steffen boys, Ebert boys and cousins and on and on. Vivian had a great yard for football in the fall and in the summer we always ran through it as she had lots of great bushes for hide and seek in the front of her yard............the field just to the EAST of her yard was also a great place for all of us kids to go on hunts and the like........glad to see the progress in the community which resulted in that field being developed but it made for a great place to play as a kid.

Shelly......r u Robert Waller's daughter thus your mom is Vivian's daughter or who are your mom and dad? If you are Georgia's (SP) daughter do you live out in Fort Stockton/Marfa, TX country or where do you reside. If this has all been discussed before and I missed it forgive me!!!

  54. As someone who has not read the Marcus News article mentioned in several posts, I have a few comments. After raising five sons who participated in football, basketball, baseball and swimming over the course of approximately 20 years (including club sports that started when they were in elementary school) I have a mental picture of who this anonymous writer might be.
My guess is that s/he is the parent of a football player who feels his 'little Johnny' isn't being used to his full potential. S/he thinks the coach is too blind to see how great their son is. That if only they would use their 'little Johnny" (a name I am using for the sake of this post) things would be different. I would guess that this is the parent of a 'first child'. One who is partaking in organized sports, at this level, for the first time. They have yet to see what transpires with young men after four years on a football team. I'm also guessing that this 'little Johnny' is mortified that his Mom or Dad has written the article and caused all this controversy. I suspect that people much closer to the team know 'exactly' who 'anonymous' is and I pray they don't let that impact how they feel about anonymous' son, 'Johnny'. I also hope this doesn't negatively affect ' Johnny's' friendships on the team. My guess is that 'Johnny' may have some natural ability but not be so 'coachable'. I've seen all kinds of natural athletes that think they don't have to work hard in practice and can just show up for the game and expect to play. Coaches aren't stupid. And, finally, I predict that if 'Johnny's' parents continue to fight his battles for him, 'Johnny' will grow up seriously impaired. For he will never really know if any success he achieved was truly due to his hard work or because Mom or Dad continually fought his battles for him. But then again, I could be all wrong. This is only a guess, in my humble opinion.
I do enjoy reading the contributions of new people posting to the blog. So. . . if anything positive comes of this it may be that, now, more people will contribute to the blog on a regular basis.

I found this on the internet yesterday, thought people might be interested. I had never heard of her and when I typed in her name this morning, I found lots of testimonials from her but seems she lives all over the United States. Goes to show you can't believe everything you read.

I lost 47 lbs with my hectic life and these (FREE) products

    By Alyssa Johnson

My name is Alyssa Johnson from Marcus, IA and I wanted to share my weight loss story with you. I am no celebrity, fitness fanatic, a person that has tons of money for a personal trainer or someone like that. I am just a wife/mom who figured out a system that worked better than all the famous diets, work out programs, etc.

First off let me tell you a little about myself. My husband Adam and I have been married for 15 years. We have 2 boys and a girl. Our oldest Brent is 13, then Taylor 9 and Ashley 5. Brent and Taylor were doing baseball together, however recently Taylor started soccer instead.

Which basically means our lives are more hectic with me chauffeuring around the kids and remember which day is which practice and who goes where. Hopefully my story can inspire you to try what I discovered and lose some weight!

  59. Ok, that last post makes absolutely no sense to me. Can someone clarify what it is the poster is trying to say?

  60. Caryn is remarking on an internet marketing scheme. There are multiple versions of it on the internet, and one version claim to be written by a Marcus resident.
